Episode 20

20. Why Your Spiritual Gifts Need Your Body: A Conversation on Grounding

Grounding is one of the most overlooked parts of spiritual and personal growth.

You can be deeply connected to energy, intuition and possibility, yet still feel unable to act, create or follow through.

This episode explores why.

We look at what happens when your energy is open but your body doesn’t feel like a safe place to land.

Why ideas and visions feel powerful in your mind but collapse when you try to bring them into the physical world.

And how grounding reconnects you with presence, stability and the capacity to turn insight into action.

If you’ve been feeling disconnected from your body, scattered in your energy or unable to act on the visions you sense so clearly, this episode will meet you exactly where you are.

Topics we explore:

  • How dissociation develops and why it disconnects you from clarity, motivation and trust
  • Why spiritual gifts, intuition and creativity need a grounded body to function
  • The link between grounding and real-life momentum, follow-through and focus
  • How grounding changes your relationship with your body and supports long-term healing

Andrea Matthies:

This is the House of Andrea.

2

:

I'm Andrea Lee Matthies, an artist,

photographer, and clairvoyant medium.

3

:

And in this podcast, we explore what it

really means to thrive as a soul having

4

:

a human experience, how to connect with

our energy, transcend those edges and

5

:

boundaries that we create for ourselves.

6

:

And open to the full

spectrum of who we are.

7

:

If you're ready to see yourself

differently, to sense more deeply,

8

:

and to expand into more of who you

are, you are in the right place.

9

:

Let's dive in.

10

:

Hello and welcome back.

11

:

I'm your host Andrea Lee Matthews, and

today I wanted to talk about the concept

12

:

of grounding, particularly in the world

that we are in here, of starting to

13

:

really open ourselves up and connect to.

14

:

Everything that we are at a soul level.

15

:

Everything that exists for us in

our past, in our future, timelines

16

:

and everything that exists for

us in source and in the field.

17

:

Grounding is such an important part

of the process that I really wanted

18

:

to just spend some time unpacking

that today, what it means, how I

19

:

ground, and why we can't skip it.

20

:

So I wanna start with a little bit of

a story give a little bit of context

21

:

to my journey with connecting in

with my senses, opening myself up,

22

:

and how I discovered that I actually

wasn't grounding enough and it was

23

:

playing havoc on my, my abilities, my.

24

:

Ability to focus, my ability really

to do this work in this space.

25

:

And I think the best place to start

with this is to share a little

26

:

bit about my journey with my body.

27

:

Which, if you've been listening to my

other podcast, Body Diaries, I talk

28

:

a lot about my, my history with my

body and in early episodes of this

29

:

podcast, a little bit about the journey

that I've had, But one of the things

30

:

that I have had to navigate over the

longest time, it's way, way better

31

:

these days, but one of the things

that I had to navigate for the longest

32

:

time was disassociation with my body.

33

:

And disassociation for me has

always been this feeling that

34

:

my body wasn't a safe place,

35

:

that it wasn't a place

that I ever wanted to be.

36

:

I had a really difficult relationship with

my body because when I was a child, I.

37

:

Was always overweight.

38

:

I grew up as a, a rotund, a chubby

child that was picked on a lot and,

39

:

clothes that were fashionable or that

I really wanted to wear didn't fit and

40

:

everything was really uncomfortable.

41

:

And quite early on I developed an eating

disorder, a binge eating disorder.

42

:

So to manage my feelings, I would snack

and I would eat particularly sweet,

43

:

um, or comforting foods that took me

away from the feelings that I had about

44

:

myself and about the body that I was in.

45

:

And so being in my body just became

46

:

This place that I just didn't wanna be.

47

:

A place of discomfort, of shame,

of embarrassment, of disgust.

48

:

So it was just this sensation that grew

within me over and over again, over

49

:

time of I don't wanna be in this body.

50

:

Right, and I just completely

started to disassociate from that.

51

:

I would wanna be everywhere else other

than present in my physical form.

52

:

So whether that was buried in stories

or movies or computer games, I got.

53

:

Heavily into gaming back in

the mid to late nineties.

54

:

Um, all those amazing retro games that

had great stories underneath them.

55

:

I loved the movies and I think

that's also where this love for.

56

:

Multimedia and programming and film.

57

:

My early degrees came from because it was

this magical escape that happened to not

58

:

be in the physical, now, not being in my

physical body, being in the, the realm of

59

:

imagination of wonder that felt tangible.

60

:

It wasn't just.

61

:

A daydream imagination

or being somewhere else.

62

:

In my mind, these were physical places

and stories that I was experiencing

63

:

in through these creative arts and

creative forms that I just wanted to

64

:

be in those places, or when I started

to develop my spiritual abilities

65

:

and things like meditation practice.

66

:

Being anywhere else other than in the

present moment in my physical body was

67

:

just delicious, you know, and this,

this eating disorder, this battle with

68

:

my body lasted decades and decades and

decades, Up until my late thirties.

69

:

And so this was a very well grained,

well patterned behavior of mine that

70

:

it wasn't even something that I felt

like I needed to escape because it was

71

:

just so familiar and so comfortable

and it, it felt good to be if it was

72

:

a meditation out there in the ether.

73

:

In a visualization where everything

was possible and everything felt

74

:

light and felt good, or buried in a

creative project or something where I

75

:

was creating a world that was perfect,

magical, comfortable, exciting, and

76

:

this, this disassociation just continued.

77

:

But what it meant was that

I was never fully present.

78

:

I was never fully in my

body in the physical moment.

79

:

There was always a part of me, even

if I was at work, even if I was doing

80

:

that heavily strategic, logical work

or present in a a relationship, a

81

:

friendship and experience, there was

always part of me that was still.

82

:

Out there, but when you spend your

entire time out there, yes, you

83

:

can be tapped into some of the

incredible things in the field.

84

:

But There's no real way to take all of

that incredible stuff that we visualize.

85

:

All the stuff that we remember talking

about last week on the podcast is

86

:

remembrance is plugging in and tapping in.

87

:

We can be connected to that being

out there, being in our meditation

88

:

or being outside of our bodies,

but the body and the physical

89

:

experience is how it gets grounded.

90

:

Into reality.

91

:

It's how it gets grounded

into physical form.

92

:

And so I had to learn to create safety

in my body, to ground my energy back into

93

:

my body, back into the present moment,

to be able to do something with it, to

94

:

be able to really powerfully connect.

95

:

All that I was both energetically,

spiritually, in a soul level and

96

:

physically into this form to be able to

really do this work at the highest level,

97

:

to be able to be everything that I am.

98

:

Because yes, we are souls

having a human experience.

99

:

But we're having a human experience.

100

:

The human part of that is

being in a physical form.

101

:

It is being tangible and

physical and grounded.

102

:

We can't just go, I mean, we can, but

it's not the same level of experience.

103

:

We can never really achieve or experience.

104

:

Everything that is here for us to

experience in a lifetime if we remain

105

:

disassociated, if we remain out there

and avoiding being in the physical body.

106

:

And I really do understand what it

feels like to find it impossible

107

:

to come home to your body but.

108

:

Being brave enough to do the

work to face the fear to go.

109

:

Into the places where you don't wanna

go and face it and just say, I see you.

110

:

I've got you.

111

:

I love you.

112

:

I'm returning you home.

113

:

I'm letting this go.

114

:

Working with the incredible

energies, modalities, healing,

115

:

whatever format your soul.

116

:

Yearns for or speaks to you.

117

:

Being brave enough to face that, to come

home to your body changes everything.

118

:

Because when we start to remember

who we are, when we start to remember

119

:

what we are capable of, what we are

tapped into, what is available to us,

120

:

and we are grounded, we are present.

121

:

Yeah, that's when we can

actually do something with it.

122

:

We have this incredible, visceral,

next level source of power to

123

:

be able to fuel those actions.

124

:

I don't know if you've ever had

that experience where you have the

125

:

incredible idea come to you or.

126

:

you start to get that spark, that

passion, that forward drive, that

127

:

yearning of, of an idea or a desire

or a vision that you're having.

128

:

And I'm like, this is it.

129

:

This is what I wanna create.

130

:

And then it comes to actually having

to take action or do something with it.

131

:

And all of a sudden

you, it's like you hit.

132

:

And a huge wall of doubt, a

fear of shame of I'm tired.

133

:

I can't harness the momentum.

134

:

I can't find the strength.

135

:

All of a sudden, all I

wanna do is just lay in bed.

136

:

It, it feels heavy, it feels

lethargic, it feels tired.

137

:

That's because we are not in our physical

form and we are trying to execute physical

138

:

things from an ungrounded, disconnected

spread all over the place, energetic

139

:

place, and it becomes impossible to

really live this human experience, Which

140

:

a core part of that is to create things.

141

:

I, I honestly believe that one

of the reasons why we incarnate

142

:

into the human form is yes to

experience things physically, but

143

:

it's to create things physically.

144

:

And that could be artistically, that

could be by using your voice, that

145

:

could be by creating something that that

heals people, inspires people, motivates

146

:

people, brings people back together.

147

:

Those things are very.

148

:

Physical, they're tangible.

149

:

They take physical actions and

decisions and movement and connections

150

:

and getting into rooms and spaces and

building things with your hands, even

151

:

if that's just typing on a keyboard.

152

:

It requires you to be connected

to your physical form and grounded

153

:

into the earthly plane, to be able

to take all of that energy and make

154

:

something with it through your body.

155

:

And so that's why having some grounding

practices can start to bring you

156

:

home, can start to create enough

space, enough reconnection with

157

:

yourself that you can start to heal.

158

:

Some of those things that are keeping you

out of your body, some of the pain, some

159

:

of the trauma, some of the, the fear, the

shame, the judgment, the self disgust.

160

:

I say these words with such love because

they are things that I have been through.

161

:

I have felt that the depth of

disgust that we as humans are

162

:

able to manufacture for ourselves.

163

:

Is mind blowing.

164

:

The depths that we can go to

from a disconnected self-hatred

165

:

perspective always blows my mind.

166

:

Just how much we can feel and create

for ourselves, opening the door to

167

:

coming home, making that decision,

making that commitment to ourself,

168

:

Choosing to come home to be back in this

physical, physical experience is one

169

:

of the bravest, noblest most powerful.

170

:

Decisions that we can make, and it

will change the trajectory that we're

171

:

on dramatically because instead of

operating outside of the body in the safe

172

:

zone, in a space where we feel less of

those dense self loathing, self hating

173

:

emotions, instead of staying in that

space, we can come into and face them.

174

:

Hold space for them, love them.

175

:

Let them be there, and then move them

out, move them on, change them, change

176

:

the programming, change the coding.

177

:

And there are so many incredible

modalities that you can use to change

178

:

the programming on those, even simply

powerfully we can make the decision.

179

:

The line in the sand drawing on

what we were talking about last week

180

:

in the episode around remembrance.

181

:

We can just remember what.

182

:

It feels like to not have that,

even if we have to reach way back

183

:

into the past, we can remember and

declare and decide enough is enough.

184

:

I want this physical experience, this

human body, this connection that I

185

:

have with this physical body of mine.

186

:

I'm choosing and am deciding to change

the relationship that I have to come

187

:

home to that, and that's where some basic

grounding practices can open the door

188

:

to being able to make that decision.

189

:

And one of the most powerful ways

is connecting with the earth.

190

:

Connecting with the earth because

the earth, and when I say earth,

191

:

I just mean the physical surfaces

underneath us because everything

192

:

underneath us is supported by this

incredible powerful planet Earth.

193

:

Right?

194

:

Even.

195

:

Even if you're in a building, even

if you're on the 20th floor, you're

196

:

in a house or you're in something

that is sitting on this incredible,

197

:

powerful, beautiful rock that is

spinning and twirling and traveling

198

:

through space in the universe, that

is complete magic and it is real.

199

:

It is tangible.

200

:

It is a physical, and the earth

knows that it's a physical.

201

:

Object that it's a physical experience

and it is so good at connecting

202

:

to itself, connecting to the

evolution, the growth, the expansion,

203

:

the expression of what it is.

204

:

And so by allowing ourselves the

ability to connect to the earth, to

205

:

connect our physical material, to

something that is equally, powerfully

206

:

physical helps our bodies remember

what it is like to love itself and

207

:

express itself confidently and freely.

208

:

And by opening the door of this

remembrance, by mapping the power

209

:

that resides in this rock that we're,

that we're sitting on, that's floating

210

:

in space that loves itself, that

expresses itself, that is unconditional

211

:

By connecting our physical form to that.

212

:

We can match that frequency,

we can match that remembrance.

213

:

And when we start to match that, it

creates a safer place for us to come home

214

:

to for our soul, our energy, our essence.

215

:

It opens the door for

that energy to come home.

216

:

And sometimes all we need is to

start that process, to open the door

217

:

to get a tiny, even if it's just a

minuscule glimpse of what that feels

218

:

like, that tiny, tiny little glimpse.

219

:

That is enough for parts of our

soul, parts of our energy to be

220

:

able to return to the body, to

reconnect, to remember what it feels

221

:

like to be whole, to be powerful.

222

:

It just starts that process of

remembering that we can over time.

223

:

Sometimes it's quick.

224

:

Sometimes it takes a little

bit longer, but over time we

225

:

can start to ground back in.

226

:

We can start to realize that the physical

experience, the human experience,

227

:

is actually a delicious, incredible.

228

:

Life changing, life motivating

experience that is available to us.

229

:

And as we come home, that's when we

can get into those powerful decisions

230

:

of, I no longer want this shame.

231

:

I no longer wanna carry this trauma.

232

:

That trauma, that fear, that shame.

233

:

I'm gonna start either working with

healing modalities to heal it, or I'm

234

:

going to start declaring that I love

myself, regardless that I'm coming

235

:

home regardless that it is safe to

let this go and play a different song,

236

:

have a different tune, have a different

frequency of safety, of trust, of power,

237

:

And allowing anything that you've

gone through to be held with love.

238

:

Of growth, of expansion, of change,

of a remembrance of your bravery.

239

:

It is possible to get to a point where

you can look back on anything that's

240

:

happened to you Of trust, of bravery, of

courage, of gratitude for who you were

241

:

and how you led yourself through it.

242

:

To be able to see how it forged you

through fire to be the incredible person

243

:

that you are to do the work that you do,

to be able to connect with your soul,

244

:

with your spirituality, with your energy,

your essence, in the way that you can now.

245

:

Because it opened you, it expanded you.

246

:

It forced you to look at shadows and

heal and grow and expand to be able to

247

:

receive more, to tap into more, to be

able to then have a physical experience

248

:

that's grounded in reality in a

physical body that you can now leverage.

249

:

To create the magic that you're here

to create, to create the art, to

250

:

create the events, the experiences,

the fashion, the music, the

251

:

everything that you are here to do.

252

:

You're now coming home to a physical

experience in a physical body grounded.

253

:

Ready, present, active, able to move.

254

:

You're not just in the vision

or in the clouds or in the

255

:

ether where it's safe anymore.

256

:

You're grounded in that physical body

to be able to do something with it.

257

:

There is no better experience.

258

:

And so I just, I want you to know that

if you are in a place where it feels

259

:

impossible, it, it still feels scary.

260

:

It feels difficult.

261

:

It feels like.

262

:

Unfathomable.

263

:

Honestly, you're just listening

to this and it just, you're like,

264

:

that's not gonna happen for me.

265

:

My trauma is too deep.

266

:

My trauma is too big.

267

:

It's too scary, it's too fearful.

268

:

I've never been able to overcome

it, and so I don't know how

269

:

I'm going to overcome it.

270

:

It's, I kind of lag it up in the ether.

271

:

I hear this a lot, and I do

remember feeling this myself.

272

:

It's like, I like it up here.

273

:

Why would I go anywhere else?

274

:

Why would I look at the shadows?

275

:

Why would I go back into those feelings?

276

:

Don't make me feel that anymore.

277

:

Don't make me look at that again.

278

:

I understand that.

279

:

But just know by living up in that

space, in that ethos, you are only

280

:

getting half of the experience.

281

:

That you came here for as a

soul incarnated in your body

282

:

at this time, you're only

getting part of the experience.

283

:

There is so much more for you to feel,

for you to create and coming home

284

:

to your body, grounding in bringing

your whole self, your spirituality.

285

:

Your energy, your essence, your mind, your

emotion, your physicality, the things that

286

:

you can touch, smell, taste, you know,

experience through your physical senses,

287

:

amplified by your energetic senses, your

intuitive knowing, your clairvoyance,

288

:

your Clance, your everything.

289

:

Bringing those together in the 360 is what

is going to blow your mind in terms of the

290

:

potential of the experience that you have.

291

:

But it takes the courage

to choose to come home.

292

:

It takes the bravery to ground

back in your body, and the way to

293

:

open the door to that is to just.

294

:

Take the baby step and start connecting

to the certainty that is under

295

:

your feet, that's underneath you.

296

:

Even if it's like 20 stories

down underneath the building.

297

:

That building is certain.

298

:

That building is made of material that

is certain that come from the earth,

299

:

that are connected to the earth.

300

:

You can go out in nature, barefoot

and naked and lay on the ground too

301

:

if you want to, but just feeling

yourself reconnect to the certainty

302

:

to the earth who knows, and trusts and

loves being in its full expression,

303

:

It'll start to bring you home again.

304

:

And you'll start to realize

how non-negotiable it is, how

305

:

incredible it feels to finally love

your body, to finally be home in

306

:

a vessel that can create magic.

307

:

And here's the best part.

308

:

You don't actually have to

change your physical body.

309

:

To fall in love with the experience

of being in a human body.

310

:

This has been one of the biggest

lessons that I have learned over my

311

:

lifetime, particularly having such

a strong history of despising and

312

:

being disgusted by my body based on my

weight or my appearance or the things

313

:

that a judged as being imperfect.

314

:

It is possible to love the physical form

that you're in when your soul is grounded

315

:

in it, and it remembers everything

that you have been now and in the past.

316

:

You can fall in love

with your physical form.

317

:

Without changing it, without losing

a ton of weight or being the picture

318

:

perfect thing that you think that

you have to be, you can actually

319

:

be in your physical body and.

320

:

Realize how powerful your sense of

touch is when you run your hands over

321

:

incredible surfaces and textures and

get that whole body chill and be like,

322

:

Ooh, I remember what this feels like.

323

:

Or to smell something, or taste something,

or see something, hear something.

324

:

Experience an interaction with someone.

325

:

It doesn't matter what you look

like or what you can and can't do.

326

:

These things don't amplify these

experiences that I'm talking about.

327

:

What amplifies those experiences

is being anchored with your full

328

:

awareness, your full consciousness,

your essence in the physical form

329

:

to be present, to receive them.

330

:

And it's amazing what happens when you

bring all of that and you anchor that

331

:

into your body and then you start to

have these experiences and you realize.

332

:

Those other things that

you thought mattered.

333

:

Appearance looks certain size,

certain shapes, certain ability.

334

:

They actually don't matter.

335

:

They don't matter as much.

336

:

And your love for yourself grows that

you're like, oh, imagine what I can

337

:

achieve regardless of where I am,

regardless of what I can do or how I look.

338

:

My relationship with my body and myself.

339

:

Has changed dramatically

over the last, oh gosh.

340

:

It happens.

341

:

more rapidly every year.

342

:

But if I compare even just five

years ago how I felt about my

343

:

body to how I feel now, it is.

344

:

Like worlds apart.

345

:

The disgust, the constant dieting, the

needing to look a certain way, to feel a

346

:

certain way has all dropped away now, and

I just love being in my physical body.

347

:

Even though, of course I still.

348

:

Aim to look after it.

349

:

I fuel it.

350

:

Well, I work out, you know, I would love

to be able to dress in different clothing,

351

:

but that is not enough for me to not love

myself now, to not show up, to not take

352

:

those micro actions based on the fears

that I had in the past or the judgments.

353

:

None of that.

354

:

Matters.

355

:

Now I can take micro actions because

I want to have those experiences and

356

:

I love myself enough to back myself.

357

:

These are the kinds of things that start

to shift and start to change when we

358

:

come down and anchor into our bodies.

359

:

When we connect into everything that

we are, all of our senses, all of

360

:

our soul, of our essence, and all of

that remembrance, everything that is

361

:

around us, we realize we are more.

362

:

Than just the physical body that we

judged or we had terrible experiences

363

:

in that we disassociated from.

364

:

We start to come home to the full

experience of being a soul in

365

:

a human body at this time, and

just what is possible for that.

366

:

And when we love ourselves on

that level, we dream bigger.

367

:

We push ourselves further into our

potential, which is just magical.

368

:

And our lives start to change.

369

:

And before we know it, we look back

even over short periods of time.

370

:

Like I look back six or 12 months

ago, and I'm like, how is my life

371

:

so beautiful and so expansive?

372

:

Now how is this even possible?

373

:

Like I, I did, this wasn't even

on my radar to feel like this.

374

:

But we realize it's real.

375

:

It's true.

376

:

The the things that we were willing to

face, the work that we were willing to

377

:

do, the connection back to ourselves

that we were willing to make was worth it

378

:

because this is where I am now and this

is what I love and this is everything.

379

:

So if you are feeling like it's time.

380

:

It's time to heal the disassociation, to

come back home to your body because you

381

:

know, you feel the power of your soul,

of your essence, of everything that you

382

:

are plugged into, but know that you need

to be in your body to be able to do that.

383

:

You need to be.

384

:

Back in love, in trust, in connection

with the physical part of this experience.

385

:

Start to ground, start to

connect back to the earth.

386

:

There are so many different

grounding practices that you can do.

387

:

You can access the body through breath.

388

:

You can, like I said, just.

389

:

Be conscious and aware of feeling

the earth underneath you, being

390

:

supported, being held by something

that knows how to love itself.

391

:

You can go out and spend

more time in nature.

392

:

Connect through physical touch

of trees and rocks and water.

393

:

Swim in the ocean.

394

:

Get your feet in the sand in

the mud, stand in the rain.

395

:

Get under the moon like

there are in infinite.

396

:

Number of avenues to get yourself

back into the physical form and

397

:

just trust your intuition on that.

398

:

Whatever pops up in your ideas, in

conversations, interactions, things

399

:

that pop up around you, watch for those

moments on opportunities of grounding.

400

:

Once you make that choice of, okay,

universe, please bring me what makes

401

:

the most sense to me to start grounding

back into my physical form so I can

402

:

experience this whole connection.

403

:

Just watch what comes up and

comes to you and follow it.

404

:

Follow it with trust.

405

:

Don't get into your head.

406

:

Don't.

407

:

Second guess.

408

:

Is this the thing?

409

:

Is this the grounding practice?

410

:

Is this what you meant or

is there something else?

411

:

Oh, I don't know if that's enough.

412

:

Just don't let any of that

mind chatter in the way.

413

:

Just get in to whatever

you're guided to do.

414

:

And allow yourself to start

connecting back to yourself.

415

:

'cause it will change your life.

416

:

It will change everything, and you'll

start to be able to experience this

417

:

life in the full infinite possibility

of what it is to be a human.

418

:

At this time, in this body,

in this lifetime, who's fully

419

:

connected to their senses, to their

abilities, to their knowing, to

420

:

their soul's, wisdom right now.

421

:

If you wanna share your favorite

grounding practices, please do.

422

:

I would love to hear them.

423

:

Of course, the invitation is always

there if you want to work together to

424

:

dive into this, to look at what your

grounding practices are, what your

425

:

soul is calling for in this space.

426

:

Reach out to me.

427

:

We can work together one-on-one.

428

:

I'm always, always here.

429

:

But in the meantime.

430

:

Just listen to your body and start

playing with some of the ways to just

431

:

open the door to coming home, and then

following those signals of where you

432

:

can start to heal, to love yourself,

back to a place where you're whole.

433

:

And really live everything

that you're here to live.

434

:

I love you.

435

:

I hope you have an absolute beautiful

week of starting to come home to yourself

436

:

and I'll see you in the next episode.

437

:

I.
